Trip Planning
Here we are taking our ocean cruises on the Southern Caribbean Sea, the Indian Ocean, the Mediterranean Sea and the Rhine River. Now we will cross off the Atlantic Ocean on the Queen Mary II, a Cunard cruise ship.
Note: We talked about doing a round trip on the Queen Mary II but decided it would be too much to do along with a two week stay in Scotland, plus the cost of course! I suggested and Virginia agreed, fly to Scotland and spend 12 days or so driving around and then taking the train to Southhampton and board the ship for a relaxing six or seven day cruise back to New York. We also found out it was cheaper coming back on the ship with a several hundred dollar savings!
Over the years I have been fortunately able to travel all over the world on long boats, canoes, river cruises and ocean cuises. Here are most of the places I have sailed on. A few are missing as I didn't take a photo on the actual water ways!

Cunard has a couple of interesting transatlantic crossings on the fabulous Queen Mary II for October 2019. Here is a brief overview:
- basic 7-night crossing New York to Southampton on Oct 18 starting at $1,649 per person double occupancy in balcony stateroom
- 9-night crossing New York to Hamburg on Oct 18 starting at $1,979 per person double occupancy in balcony stateroom
- 14-night crossing Quebec City to Southampton on Oct 11 (includes stops in Saguenay Fjord and Nova Scotia) starting at $3,649 per person double occupancy in balcony stateroom
- 16-night crossing Quebec City to Hamburg on Oct 11 (includes stops in Saguenay Fjord and Nova Scotia) starting at $4,139 per person double occupancy in balcony stateroom
Please note Cunard is one of the few (or maybe even the only one) that sticks to adherence of classes for dining and admittance to public spaces. This means certain restaurants are only available to "first class" passengers (example The Grill). Cunard also enforces a strict dress code.
One more thing, the ship is massive, and you'll find yourself walking a great deal (and getting lost).
Actually 2 more things, Queen Mary has an onboard planetarium. Just a thought: why not do the transatlantic crossing for your trip to Scotland?
Similar itineraries and pricing available. Easy to take the train in Southampton to Edinburgh or Glasgow

History of the Cunard Line |
Cunard Line is a British-American cruise line based at Carnival House at Southampton, England, operated by Carnival UK and owned by Carnival Corporation Since 2011, Cunard and its three ships have been registered in Hamilton, Bermuda.
In 1839 Samuel Cunard, a Halifax shipowner, was awarded the first British transatlantic steamship mail contract, and the next year formed the British and North American Royal Mail Steam-Packet Company together with Robert Napier, the famous Scottish steamship engine designer and builder, to operate the line's four pioneer paddle steamers on the Liverpool–Halifax–Boston route. For most of the next 30 years, Cunard held the Blue Riband for the fastest Atlantic voyage. However, in the 1870s Cunard fell behind its rivals, the White Star Line and the Inman Line. To meet this competition, in 1879 the firm was reorganised as the Cunard Steamship Company, Ltd, to raise capital.

Our Travel Agent Viviane Tondeur, setup a special cocktail party for us with a purser at five p.m. We had cocktails and snacks and had an hour of an overview of the Cunard Line and the status of a new ship being built. We learned about the changing of the cruise business. All in all, a great way to start the crossing. There were only six people at the private party and all were from California, four from southern and of course, the two of us from the Bay Area - San Francisco!

We had early seating at the Britannia Restaurant, six p.m. We liked an early dinner as there was much to do after dinner and we wanted to relax and get ready for a late evening. We were on the lower deck of the restaurant with a great view of the ocean. Looking good if I do say so myself!
