Map of the Subway System in Washington D.C.
My hotel, the Club Quarters was located at the Farragut West subway station at 839 17th Street, two blocks from the White House! This is an excellent area to stay at as the Mayflower hotel is only three blocks away plus the ease in using the subway system. The Blue and Orange lines stops beneath the hotel and you can take either one to the L'enfant Plaza Station which is a block from the Air & Space Museum. Or you can get off at the Smithsonian Station and walk across the mall to the National Gallery of Art, the National Archives, and other museums. You may also walk to the Bureau of Engraving and Printing building to view money being printed. The Capital South Station is located a few blocks from the Capital Building and the Library of Congress. The Blue line also goes to Arlington Cemetery. The Red line goes to the Union Station which of course, is the Union Train Station or to Dupont Circle which is the 'in' place for singles and the Phillips Collection! To change from the blue or orange line to the red line, transfer at the Metro Center Station. If you should use the green or yellow lines, transfer at the L'enfant Plaza Station. A third transfer point is the Gallery Place-China Town Station. When transferring, do not go out of the station. Walk to the center of the level you are on and find the escalators that will take you to the upper or lower levels and the line you want to connect to, it can be confusing the first few days! The subway is inexpensive and easy to use and everyone was helpful when you asked for help!
