Notes on Elizabeth & Anthony Agiou's life: Anthony 'Tony' Agiou was born on April 10, 1894 in Athens Greece. Elizabeth Buntjer, was born on August 29, 1904 in Freeport, Stephenson County, Illinois. They were married on September 28, 1923 in Rockford, Winnebago County, Illinois. In
1940
Tony and Liz lived in Fox Valley, Geneva Illinois,
and owned a restaurant. They
then moved to Stoughton, Wisconsin
and owned a hotel there. Another
move
to Monroe, Wisconsin
and another hotel was in the works! At
one time they owned a nice house in St. Charles
for eight months but was lost in a card game. Tony loved to gamble
and won and lost fortunes on a regular basis! This also happened to
a house they owned for a while in Freeport Illinois! Finally
they lived in Freeport
where they bought the Licondo Hotel
and leased the Freeport Hotel
on the opposite corner. They lived in the Primavera Apartments, which they owned, a beautiful building with fabulous suites of rooms. They were living there when they threw a big party for their 25th wedding anniversary around 1948. I remember that party very clearly as I, (Chuck Buntjer), and my cousins, stayed in the kitchen and drank the champagne that was left in the bottom of the bottles! We all were slightly high and only around eight years old or so! John J. Buntjer and Rena (Buss) Buntjer (Elizabeth's parents), had their 60th wedding anniversary at the Freeport Hotel. Tony
and Liz were still living there in 1962
when her father, John
J. Buntjer, Senior, passed away. They
then moved into a room with a kitchenette in the Licondo Hotel.
The
Licondo eventually was run down and was demolished. After
an extended illness Elizabeth passed away in 1980 and the lot where the
Licondo Hotel had been located was sold along with the Monroe Hotel to pay
hospital expenses. There
were no Children. Anthony
'Tony' Agiou was passed away on March 25, 1974
and was buried at Chapel Hill Cemetery, Freeport, Stephenson, Illinois,
USA. Elizabeth Buntjer was buried on April 26, 1980, at Chapel Hill Cemetery, Freeport, Stephenson, Illinois, USA. (Submitted by Yvonne C. Burt) |
