Here I am in front of Queen Hatshepsut's mortuary temple, one of the greatest buildings considering its time and place in history!   The temple is built in terraces against the steep cliffs, very dramatic. It was called in ancient times as "Most Splendid of All".

It was built by the queen's architect, Senmut, who also was her political advisor and lover. Her famed voyage to Punt on the Somali coast, is recorded in the carvings on one of the colonnade. There were carvings of fish found in the Red Sea with life like colors still visible after 3,000 years!

The temple was at one time in shambles but the Polish Archaeological Mission has been carrying out a massive reconstruction for many years and also illuminates the temple at night.
