Trip Planning
I saw a cruise to the island of Bermuda, one of the islands I haven't visited and it looked like a good deal. I took the Norweigian Epic from Los Angeles to Puerto Vallarta in February for my 87th birthday.
I will be taking the Norweigian Breakawau on this cruise to Bermuda and Halifax Canada.
Overview of Nova Scotia & Halifax
Nova Scotia:
Nova Scotia is a picturesque coastal province located on Canada's eastern seaboard within the Maritime region. With a
population surpassing 1 million people, it is the most populous province in Atlantic Canada, yet it remains the country's second-smallest province by land area. Surrounded almost entirely by the Atlantic Ocean, the province consists of a peninsula, Cape Breton Island, and thousands of smaller coastal islands.
Geography & Climate
Nova Scotia’s geography is deeply defined by its massive 13,300 km coastline, meaning no point in the province is more than 60–67 km away from the sea. It is connected to mainland Canada and the neighboring province of New Brunswick solely by the narrow 24 km-wide Isthmus of Chignecto.
The province features a modified continental climate heavily influenced by the ocean. Coastal areas, including the capital city, enjoy milder winters and cooler summers, while the inland areas and highlands experience more pronounced winter cold. Thick sea fog and ample year-round precipitation are common traits of the local weather.
Halifax:
Halifax, officially the Halifax Regional Municipality (HRM), is the capital and most populous municipality of the Canadian province of Nova Scotia, and the most populous municipality in Atlantic Canada. It consists of four former municipalities that were amalgamated in 1996: Halifax, Dartmouth, Bedford, and Halifax County.
Halifax is an economic centre of Atlantic Canada, home to a concentration of government offices and private companies. Major employers include the Department of National Defence, Dalhousie University, Nova Scotia Health Authority, Saint Mary's University, the Halifax Shipyard, various levels of government, and the Port of Halifax. Resource industries found in rural areas of the municipality include agriculture, fishing, mining, forestry, and natural gas extraction. As of July 1, 2025, the population of the Halifax census metropolitan area was estimated at 544,834. In the 2021 census, 348,634 people lived in the municipality's urban area.
Overview of Bermuda
A timeline of the island of Bermuda:
• 1503-1609 The "Isle of Devils": Spanish and Portuguese ships used the uninhabited islands for fresh meat and water, earning a dangerous reputation for shipwrecks and mysterious noises (from wild hogs and the endemic cahow bird).
• 1609 The Sea Venture Shipwreck: The English merchant ship Sea Venture (flagship of the Virginia Company) wrecked on Bermuda's reefs while sailing to Jamestown. The survivors stayed for nine months, launching permanent English settlement.
• 1612 Founding of St. George's: Colonists established St. George's, which is the oldest continuously inhabited English-speaking settlement in the Western Hemisphere.
• 1620 Representative Government: Bermuda introduced a parliament, becoming a self-governing colony under the Virginia Company and later the Somers Isles Company.
• 1684 British Crown Colony: The Somers Isles Company charter was revoked, and Bermuda officially became a Crown colony (now a British Overseas Territory).
• 1815 New Capital: The seat of government moved from St. George's to the centrally located port of Hamilton.
• 1834 Abolition of Slavery: Following the 1807 outlawing of the slave trade, full emancipation for enslaved Africans and Indigenous people took effect on August 1, 1834.
• 20th Century & Modern Era: Bermuda transitioned from a strategic Royal Navy and military outpost into a premier global offshore financial center and tourism destination.
